Shift work is linked not only with sleep disorders but also with impaired alertness and increased risk of chronic physical and psychological diseases. The health of healthcare workers can deteriorate because of shift work, and can compromise patient care if not managed properly. And even if you don’t work in that kind of environment, not getting enough sleep is no fun and can really throw you off your game.
Drugs such as alcohol or sleeping pills are sometimes used to help people fall asleep, but this isn't a great long-term solution.
Some people choose earplugs as an inexpensive and effective way to block noise. They can make a tremendous difference for light sleepers or for people who live in an environment where noise is common. There’s some debate about whether it’s okay to use them every night. But for some, like shift workers, it can feel like there is little choice.
