School's back

And the parental routines begin. But change is always happening, even if you don't have children. Do you give yourself room to experience the different rhythms of life?

As our kids go back to school, the routine is proving hard for them to re-adapt to. The summer holidays offer more freedom, less routine, and changes in environment. Going back to the regimen of school seems like a tough ask of small children. So, a few more meltdowns than usual, and we’ve booked the little ones for fewer after-school activities, as we try to make sure they have enough room to breathe and recover as the school weeks unfurl.

I wonder if we adults allow ourselves the same grace as we change the rhythms of our day, from holiday to back-to-work mode? I wonder if we allow ourselves to fully experience the changes in these rhythms and how they make us feel? Or do we over-schedule ourselves during our downtime and then wonder why we it all feels so hard?

It’s something I’m trying to remember to apply to myself as an adult, as well as in my parenting role.
