So, working in big box retail, we "facilitate and encourage but don't confront" the non-mask wearers. My colleague (who has direct line of sight to the main door) is keeping score of "count of non-mask wearers/hours spent observing". It had reached 8, then when the latest reminder came out, it dropped to around 4. The real issue we see is the sense of entitlement and arrogance, which you don't mention. Where do these fit in to the science you espouse?

Espouse? It's a view distilled through 35 years of experience in research, policy advice and clinical work. What you speak to could be viewed as a form of confirmation bias because a sense of entitlement can be thought of as a characteristic based on the belief that someone deserves special treatment or recognition for something they didn't earn. I totally recognise that this is a huge problem, where people believe that rules that apply to mere mortals don't apply to them. From refusing to mask-up in retail to partygate in the UK: it's everywhere.

Sorry, I hoped espouse was the right word – not trying to demean your experience and clinical qualifications in any way!

Thanks for your very prompt & thorough reply! 😊

Ah, no worries Oliver. By way of explanation, I do worry about the descent of trolls on anything to do with the pandemic, so will be policing this substack quite strongly to protect myself and others. Totally hear what you say though ..

I don't think we should let off that easily all the Anti-vaxxers, Anti-maskers & Anti-mandaters spreading & creating disinformation & outright lies. By making minimal necessary health measures political the Anti-Sensible crowd is letting people die unnecessarily.

So to all of the Anti-Sensible crowd who repeatedly platform & spread the lies, so people don't follow necessary health measures, resulting in COVID spreading faster, more people suffering long term COVID & dying - the SNOT from all the excess COVID sufferers is on your hands, phones & keyboards!

I know this can cause people to feel pretty angry, and I think that media can be unhelpful in some cases. Most of the time they are pretty good. It's when they start going to 'presenting both sides of the argument' without paying due care to weight of evidence. Anyway, I'm glad we can keep it civil here, and I'd like it to stay that way.
